As the over all series was able my life long struggle to read, I thought we’d have fun by interview my wife Shannon Elise Muir Broden who had an entirely different experience growing up and reading.

Hi All,

When I was a child, a local radio station would play an hour of “old time radio” programs, just before my bed time. These were radio shows from the 1930s to the 1950s. Even at a very young age I enjoyed this theatre of sound and imagination. From comedy shows like Jack Benny and Burns & Allen, to mystery tales, and adventure stories like the Lone Ranger, The Shadow, and The Green Hornet. These mystery men were the super heroes I knew long before I was given my first comic book.

Hi All,
Apologies for the delay, I had some trouble with recording the latest episode, and also had to go back and make edits on the first two. They’re all up now.

Hi All, and Welcome back.

Several years ago, I received an odd phone call from someone who claimed be from my childhood and wanted to meet at a local restaurant. I did not recognize the name, but agreed to meet.

It turned out the person was going through Alcoholics Anonymous. Step number eight in AA’s Twelve step program, is to reach out to people they had harmed and be willing to make amends. This person turned out to be one of the many school bullies who had made my childhood a living hell.

However, after all the years that had gone by I had absolutely no memory of who the person was that was sitting across the table from me. Oh, I remember most of the bullying from elementary school, Junior High, and High School; but I just couldn’t place who this guy was. I had moved on to face other bullies in my life.

What does this have to do with my struggles to read? A whole lot more than you’d think.

As mentioned last week, and as part of my next Toastmasters assignment, I have begun a podcast that I am putting up on Youtube. May find other places to put it, but for now a video podcast will be up, hopefully, weekly on Youtube. Please Like, Subscribe, and comment on the different episodes, as the response is part of the Toastmasters project.

I have a lot to learn on recording videos, and finding the appropriate software to edit it. I’m hoping each episode will get better than this first one.

He’s doing what now?

That’s right, I’m starting a podcast.

Don’t look so surprised.

It was over a year ago began writing my blog regularly as part of a Toastmasters assignment and later speech. Now I am doing a similar assignment for TM, but doing it as a series of episodes in a podcast.

This is going to take a bit more work. The average Toastmasters speech I’ve given is 5 to 7 minutes long. At the end of this assignment, I will have to give a similar speech while also playing a sample of the podcast itself. Since the post has to either be 6 ten-minute episodes, or 10 six-minute episode, or there abouts, so that it all adds up to 60 minutes. Which will be the longest Toastmasters “speech” I will have given. Of course, this one is broken up in to multiple smaller ones so it might be easier.

Certainly, easier than the actual speech I need to do soon which will be twenty minutes of me standing in front of the club. What in the world am I going to speak about then? I have no idea.

We’ll see what happens with that speech and this podcast.

Hopefully, it will be interesting enough that I’ll keep doing it beyond the first series of episodes.

Content is King…

Or so they say, but figuring out what content is isn’t easy.
While out walking yesterday I stopped to record one of my YouTube Shorts. Forgetting the sound of cars in the background I recorded it three times but wasn’t happy with it at all.
Coming up with content ideas for little shorts is bad enough, coming up with content for two regular blogs here a week, and one more about Voice Acting over at Substack is all the harder.

Thank you all for your prayers for my father. He has a lot of healing ahead of him. Because of that I’ve been on the road a lot and haven’t had a lot of time to think of blog post ideas. Hopefully I will do better next week.

Engaging Humor – Writing a Compelling Blog

Okay, it took a couple of extra days, but I was finally able to do a recording of my Toastmasters Speech that was based on the blog series I began writing at the start of the year. So let’s get to it.

The Nerve You Say

Hi all,

I’ll be telling you about the Toastmasters speech in an upcoming blog once I get a good recording of it to share with you.
What I can tell you now is my nerves really got to me during the and I’m not really certain why.
I think it had to do with having to work with running my PowerPoint presentation on Zoom while maintaining eye contact with the camera while trying not to look at my script.
That’s all an excuse, I stumbled through it but I got it done. Surprisingly, people liked the speech, I’ll tell you about that soon.
I felt like I was back in school when I was scared to speak up at all. I’ve already told you about the one time in High School I gave a speech.
As an adult I was still nervous about doing any public speaking, but things began to change in our adult Sunday School when I began to speech up with my thoughts on what the teacher was saying and the Biblical verses we were studying. I then began finding myself volunteering to teach the class from time to time. My wife and I have taught together a few times as well. I was also being ask to do the Bible reading each week in class.
Then came the next and newest part of my life. An interest in Voice Acting. As a scriptwriter I wanted to know what the actor needed from me.
So, I took a voice acting class. I wasn’t expecting much, and certain I would be nervous stepping up to the mic in front of the entire class for the very first time.
You know what? I had no nerves what so ever and I read the script and performed with joy. I was so surprised by how I felt doing it I knew this was something I would continue to do. I would go on to take further voice acting classes over the next several years, have demo reels produced, and audition for roles.
So why did the nerves swell up during this speech? I really can’t say, but I won’t let them stop me from doing anything anymore.
Hope to have the speech up soon.
