Been working on recording an audio drama for a podcast over the last few days, unfortunately the apartment building just next to ours is going through some remodeling and the noise is constantly interrupting me. That noise is teaching me to be patient, and it is also teaching me to relax in my recording. I pay too much attention to every mistake I make, every breath I take, every noise I create. I stop too often and go back and make corrections.
I’m a terrible nitpicker when it comes to my own work. Always looking for every error. Bad me, bad me. In the processes the character I am playing dies with ever start/stop, with every edit. The joy of playing is lost.
I need to get back to playing.
I need to learn to go all the way through a section of text even if I make mistakes. Let it flow, find the heart of the characters I’m performing and playing. Then go back and make the corrections. Of course, editing here can be problematic, but if I have it all together, I might find out that a line with a little breath in it sounds a whole lot better in context of the entire performance instead of just going bit by bit.
That’s a major lesson that I’ve probably known, but it had to be woken back up. Thanks’ noisy neighbors…?
On a side note, I want to talk about this blog briefly. I intend to continue to post twice a week, (hopefully Tuesday and Thursday every week as I’ve done since the start of the year), and I’ve got plenty to write about. If it’s interesting to you, well… we’ll find out.
That said, I’m starting a second blog, focusing entirely on my experience in Voice Acting. You’ll be able to find that blog on Substack. It will start with once a week posts. Thank you for checking it out.
You can still visit my Voice Over website here.
Thank you also for continuing to read the rest of my blogs here.
